Hot topics in Open Science: digital autonomy, sustainability and knowledge security

Room 8 Ruys Zaal

Chairs: Mark van Assem (Open Science NL), Jeroen Sondervan (Open Science NL)

Open science is a movement that advocates for a more open and participatory research practice, in which publications, data, software, and other forms of scientific information are shared at the earliest possible stage and made available for reuse.

In this workshop, we will introduce a number of key hot topics in open science. This will be followed by an open discussion; participants can indicate which developments in open science they need more information about or which challenges they face when it comes to putting open practices into action. Examples of topics that may be relevant:

  • Digital sovereignty and autonomy
  • Open science infrastructures
  • The open publication of scientific results (e.g., publications, data, software, etc.)

Mark van Assem and Jeroen Sondervan will lead this session based on their experiences at Open Science NL, an initiative within NWO that helps accelerate the transition to open science.

NWO has long been taking the lead in this transition, for example through its commitment to Open Access (since 2009) and its data management policy (since 2016), changes in Recognition and Rewards (e.g., through the narrative CV), and support for open science infrastructures.

A further boost came in 2023 with the establishment within NWO of the Open Science NL initiative, funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). The initiative  funds a wide range of initiatives: from open science infrastructure to strengthening both support capacity at institutions and communities that bring open science to practice.
