Willem Burger ZaalTitle:Music meets Computing: decoding a fundamental human practice
Abstract
The Art of ICT - this year’s theme of ICT.OPEN - celebrates ICT as a creative and human-centered practice that transforms ideas into meaningful digital experiences for society. In this talk, I explore different perspectives on how the collaboration between ICT and the arts creates meaningful experiences for supporting the fundamental role of arts in our daily lives and society. Specifically, I will talk about music. I will show how the computational modeling of music information enhances our understanding of how we make sense of music. We employ the gained insights on music for facilitating novel forms of interactions through technology, such as within serious games for music education, health, well-being and inclusion. I discuss the diversity of computional approaches required to address the rich variety in music’s structures, our responsibility towards supporting human creativity through technology, and the opportunities that arise from unlocking music’s power through digital experiences.
