Abstract:
ICT facilitates sustainability efforts, but how sustainable is ICT itself? Following an inspiring keynote speech by Barbara Kathmann, Dutch parliamentarian and an influential advocate in sustainable digitalization, we will explore the state of affairs in designing sustainable ICT. Taking examples from the current situation in the Netherlands and Europe, we will call for coordinated action for investing in research and development of sustainable ICT. We make a case for setting up new academic education programs for ICT specialists from the sustainability perspective, with a motto of “sustainable by design”.
