Track description

Software systems underpin nearly every sector of modern society. As these systems become more complex, it becomes harder to make sure they work reliably, are used responsibly and truly benefit the society. This track, organised by VERSEN will bring together researchers and practitioners who work on improving how we design, build, and maintain software. We aim to showcase real examples of how software engineering research has helped solve societal problems by making software more energy-efficient, preventing errors in safety-critical systems, building fair and transparent algorithms, or improving digital services for communities. By emphasizing both technical innovation and societal responsibility, our goal is to highlight how better software engineering can lead to more trustworthy and responsible technology for everyone.

In more detail, the track will explore current research challenges in software reliability, sustainable and energy-aware computing, verification of AI-enabled software, secure and privacy-preserving architectures, and human-centred system design. We aim to highlight work that demonstrates concrete societal impact, such as software supporting healthcare workflows, strengthening critical infrastructures and enabling collaboration between technical and social disciplines. The track may include a keynote, short research talks, and a panel discussion focusing on the responsibilities and real-world effects of software systems.
